Moving 18,000 KM around the world has a way of changing what you once considered normal & comfortable. The past months here in Melbourne my opinions & choices have moved further out of where my typically English comfort zone had me penned in. From Cultural beliefs, politics & beyond my views have changed. My coming Blogs will cover namely Fitness & Nutrition but a good Coach knows this inexplicably links to lifestyle and our mindset. My small change this week is attempting to write a Blog – Well outside my comfort zone!
As a short intro to me in this first Blog I moved to Melbourne From Bath, England last October. Searching for fitness work to continue my career in an area of the world more inclined to all things fitness! I have been fortunate to find the perfect job with Transcend Health & Fitness in South Melbourne, being around others who like to nerd out on all things fitness and have as nearly a bad a sense of humour as I do (always helps). Back when I first qualified as a Trainer was the start of pushing out of my known comfort zones. I quickly realised where most trainers fail, even the ‘best’ of them. Once they find what works for them or for a client of theirs that’s it. There can not be a better way & everything else is wrong. You don’t eat 250g of Protein a day… your wrong. You don’t HIIT train… your wrong. No-one needs Cardio don’t do it… your wrong if you do. What do you mean you go to Crossfit… it’s wrong. I have driven myself no matter how comfortable I get to keep pursuing new outlets in the industry. A few of these have included, Macro counting, German volume training, 5:2 Diet, Bodybuilding splits, Plant based eating, Intermittent Fasting & Crossfit. I don’t believe there is one perfect style of Nutrition or Training but there are bad ones. One way to give my clients good advice? Try them out myself!
So this March I have decided after fairly in depth research to do a month long Paleo trial. My first few blogs will cover my findings week by week. I currently see the logic behind it and there is some solid research but my main reasons for trialling this form of diet is the links to improved Gut health, improved energy for performance & reducing body fat. Horrible topic but myself and millions of people suffer with Gut issues due to our atrocious Western diets. My main problems are in the form of bloating & digestive issues with certain foods. As most Fitness Coaches would force on you that you need carbs to perform this will test this theory. Finally I have to admit Melbourne’s serious food scene took the foodie in me by surprise and a cut was on the cards anyway so this was perfectly timed to trial.
At the end of week 1 I will put up my first full Blog covering what exactly Paleo is and why I’m currently trialling it as a diet change. Also what my early responses are from my body in terms of energy, Gut health and physique.
I hope these Blogs will be useful to anyone looking into the Paleo diet but also those trainers and others that want to open their mind and learn a different style of diet and lifestyle. Signing out for now, JoeHulinPT.
